Biodiversity experiments

Contents
This course will provide an overview of the past and running biodiversity experiments, as well as their main objectives. The course will include:
- An introduction to the history of biodiversity experiments and their design
- Pros and cons of different experimental approaches with subsequent discussion
- Developing an own „next generation“ biodiversity experiment in groups and having a presentation on the design of the experiment and main research questions
- Field trip visit to biodiversity experiment sites
Didactic aims:
- Develop and design an own biodiversity experiment, and present research ideas in a clear and concise way
- Learning how to design experiments
- Learning presentation techniques
Didactic elements:
This is an intensive 3-day course consisting of lectures, student seminar, field trip, and practical hands-on course work. An additional 30 hours of self-study is required for successful completion of this course.

We study the interactions among organisms above and below the ground as well as within and across trophic levels in terrestrial ecosystems. We are interested in how environmental change affects the biodiversity of ecosystems as well as how shifts in community composition and biodiversity relate to the functioning and service provisioning of ecosystems.
