Contents

The main focus of this course will be on gaining skills for writing a plain language science news item. Therefore, this course is especially tailored towards PhD researchers who are interested in publishing news items about their research results under “News” on the iDiv website. We will talk about aspects like: formulating your main message, text structure and information to include, easy-to-understand and vivid language, finding a title, including quotes.

Furthermore, during this course you will get a brief overview about different channels for communicating your research to the public and you will get insights into the work of a media relations office at a scientific institution. We will also briefly talk about how to handle journalist requests.

Didactic aims/ competencies gained
Participants will become acquainted with communicating research topics in a way that is tailored towards the target group ‘non-expert laypeople’ in written language (website news items, press releases). They will also learn some general basics of science communication at a scientific institution.

Didactic elements
Didactic elements are lectures, hands-on writing sessions and group discussions with the purpose to enable participants to communicate their research topics in a non-expert environment (website news items, press releases etc.) and they will get acquainted to general basics of science communication in a scientific institution.


Lecturer

Dr Tabea Turrini

Tabea holds a PhD in Ecology and Evolution and has been working in science communication for 3 years. She is responsible for press releases and news items at the iDiv Media&Communications department.
