Contents

Participants will receive an introduction into data- and metadata management and get an overview of tools available for data management (data cleaning, data visualization etc.). Questions about how to write good and enriched meta-data and the importance of metadata from the perspective of data user, data provider, institutions and organizations such as iDiv, journal publishers, data repositories and funding agencies will be tackled. The best practices for structuring data will be mentioned  and participants will be introduced to the data management tools available on iDiv data repository. Furthermore, the benefits and requirements of data managements for Open Science initiatives is evaluated including an introduction to the Open Science initiative in iDiv.

Participants should be able to handle Excel, no other prior knowledge is required.

Competences gained:

Participants will gain a good understanding of data- and metadata management and how to integrate it in scientific work. They will enhance their ability to write a good and enriched metadata and the understanding and ability to write a data management plant for research projects or funding proposals.

 An increased awareness about the importance of transparency, open data and data sharing and the ability to view biodiversity research data in a broader perspective, are further didactic aims of the course.


Lecturers

Dr Jitendra Gaikwad

Jitendra is the Head of the Biodiversity Informatics Unit (BDU) in iDiv. His research focus in the field of biodiversity informatics has been development of biodiversity data management platforms, biodiversity data integration, visualization and analysis as well as outreach and capacity building for mobilizing primary biodiversity data.

Dr Roel van Klink

Roel is a postdoc in sDiv and works with data collected by others. He is also experienced in collecting his own data and therefore has hands-on experience in the needs of both primary data-collectors and those synthesizing these data.
