Liesje Mommer
Alexandra Weigelt

Alexandra Weigelt
Jens Kattge

Project summary:
In addition to providing anchorage, the primary function of roots is to take up belowground resources, especially nitrogen, phosphorus and water. Plants have evolved a wide range of root traits to capture these resources, and to respond to changes in their availability in space and time. However, variation in root traits across species in relation to their function for plant growth and ecosystem functioning is not well understood; largely due the fact that roots are ‘hidden’ in the soil. Currently, there is great interest in understanding the root functional diversity at a global scale, which has resulted in the compilation of a global unified root database (FRED) of 170 root traits from over 1500 unique species, and linked to ~200 environmental characteristics. sROOT aims to i) test fundamental hypotheses about the value of root trait syndromes for predicting physiological and ecological functions of roots (i.e. root economics spectrum); ii) investigate the role of mycorrhiza as integral component of a functional root trait framework iii) investigate traits covariations among plant organs, particularly leaves and roots, by linking both above- and belowground traits from the same species; iv) provide a root trait protocol handbook.
