Linking genetic parameters with the IUCN Red List Status

The IUCN Red List is an important tool for conservation assessment, however, the current IUCN classification does not include measurements of genetic diversity of a given species. Previous studies used different sets of genetic data but failed to link genetic diversity to IUCN status. These studies have one major limitation, as they assessed genetic diversity based on one point in time. Being part of the IUCN SSC Indonesia Species Specialist Group and studying demographics and genetics of Indonesian primates over decades, I aim to explore new avenues to possibly link genetic diversity to IUCN status together with collaborators at iDiv. Specifically, we will use detailed demographic data collected from different primate populations in Indonesia and correlate genetic diversity to different population sizes (especially effective population size) over time and space. If confirmed in larger samples and across taxa, we plan to publish our data and provide IUCN with relevant recommendations.
