Effects of land use on soil invertebrates – from local to global

Human activities, particularly land use change and habitat degradation, are causing major declines in biodiversity worldwide, but studies mostly focus on above-ground taxa - the effects of land use change on soil invertebrates is less well known, despite their importance for soil ecosystem services. At a local scale the Earthworm Watch citizen science project shows that earthworm abundance differs significantly between garden habitats in the United Kingdom and the three ecotypes respond in different ways. I also combine global datasets to test whether soil physical properties influence the response of biodiversity to land-use change and if these differ for soil and above-ground biodiversity. My results indicate that soil invertebrates may not respond to human pressures in the same way as above-ground biodiversity.

"The botanical diversity of Latin America: a threatened treasure of the green planet"

Talk Summary

The idea of Earth as "The Blue Planet" is quite popular—and important. After all, about two thirds of Earth’s surface is covered by oceans. However, terrestrial biologists consider Earth, as “The Green Planet”. Since the onset of plant colonization of the land, some 420 million years ago, our planet has undergone a process of “greening”, leading to the exuberant botanical diversity that currently decorates Earth. (Just look around these magnificent Leipzig Botanical Gardens!) Botanical diversity however, is not homogeneous around the globe. One of the regions that stands out is Latin America. And this is what this presentation is about: highlighting the diversity of ecosystems, species, life forms, endemic taxa, and domesticated plants present in this region. Yet, this emerald treasure is threatened by Anthropogenic activity, an aspect that I will briefly highlight as well. In closing, I will discuss why it is important for humans that this botanical treasure be preserved well into the future.

Ayco Tack & Beyene Zewdie - "Coffee at the agro-ecological interface"

"Arabica coffee originated in the Ethiopian highlands, and provides a livelihood for millions of poor smallholder farmers in this region. While expansion and intensification of coffee production degrades the natural forests, and the release of disease-resistant varieties threatens the wild genetic diversity of coffee, shade coffee systems can also harbour high biodiversity. In this project, we explore this dual role of coffee, with the ultimate goal of improving farmer’s livelihood, preserving biodiversity and utilizing ecosystem services. In particular, we are interested how genetic and species diversity can aid in the natural and sustainable control of plant-feeding insects and pathogens on coffee."

Frederik De Laender: Integrating environmental change into biodiversity and ecosystem function research: implications and a way forward.

Environmental change can affect ecosystem function directly, or indirectly by altering biodiversity. Which of these effects is more important? I will present general theory and data of algae communities showing that direct effects on function can outweigh biodiversity-mediated effects on function. I will also present a strategy to mechanistically study environmental change effects on biodiversity and function, based on an integration of stressors into resource uptake theory.

Seminar Series with Santiago Soliveres (public)

Santiago Soliveres: Biodiversity-functioning relationships in the real world

Global change drivers are changing the biota of every ecosystem on Earth. These changes not only relate to changes in species richness, but also in species abundance and composition, and not only occur at local but also at regional and global scales. I will first summarize research on potential mechanisms to buffer biodiversity changes under ongoing global change, namely positive and intransitive plant-plant interactions. Experimental manipulations have allowed us to understand the mechanisms by which diversity changes may impair ecosystem functioning. However, we are now only starting to understand how important are these biotic changes in comparison with other drivers of ecosystem functioning such as climate, habitat type of land use. In the second part of this seminar, I will summarize results from studies addressing the consequences for the functioning of natural and semi-natural ecosystems of these biotic changes in multitrophic communities and different “dimensions” of plant diversity. In so doing, I will highlight some caveats of current approaches and suggest future directions for research in this exciting field.

Title: Individual-based ecology and modelling in biodiversity research: Why, how, and whereto?

Volker Grimm, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, Department of Ecological Modelling

The structure and dynamics of ecological systems emerges from the behaviour of individual organisms and their interactions with each other and their abiotic environment. This does not necessarily imply that all ecological theory and application has to go all the way down to the individual, but it means that it cannot be excluded from the outset that individuals matter. I will summarize arguments and examples (e.g., vultures, tigers, honeybees, grasslands) for including the individual-based perspective into ecology and biodiversity research. I will demonstrate how this perspective can be implemented using individual/agent-based models and how this approach matured over the last decade. Finally, I will argue that ecological theories need to be cross-level by taking into account the mutual link between the individual’s and the system’s perspective.
