Membership honours individuals who have demonstrated “sustained academic excellence”
Prof. Henrique Miguel Pereira, has been elected to the Academia Europaea, one of Europe’s most prestigious scholarly institutions. As a research group leader at iDiv and the Martin Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Pereira has significantly contributed to understanding global biodiversity change. He is also an expert in the fields of biodiversity monitoring and science-policy.
Pereira’s election recognises his exceptional contributions, which include over 100 journal articles and leadership roles in initiatives such as EuropaBON, a biodiversity monitoring project for Europe. His work has bridged science and policy, influencing environmental decision-making at the European and international level. Pereira has served as the Director of Peneda-Gerês National Park and as the coordinator of the Portugal Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. He joined iDiv and MLU in 2013. He has served as the Co-Chair of the Biodiversity Observation Network of the Group on Earth Observations – GEO BON and of the Expert Group on Scenarios and Models from the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
New members were formally welcomed during the Building Bridges conference in Wroclaw, Poland, last week. As a member of Academia Europaea, Pereira will contribute to promoting European research and providing science-based advice to policymakers across Europe.
