The two-day workshop provides a comprehensive journey into creating effective and aesthetically pleasing data visualizations with the programing language R. Day 1 focuses on the fundamentals of the Grammar of Graphics, introducing core concepts and essential techniques for building clear, structured graphics with the ggplot2 package. Day 2 explores advanced modifications and the use of extension packages to create polished, publication-ready graphics, and the development of interactive graphics.
After completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- apply the principles of the Grammar of Graphics
- efficiently create of various chart types
- leverage existing themes and color palettes
- use labels and annotations to guide the audience
- build complex multi-panel figures
- craft interactive charts with tooltips and hover effects
Participants should be familiar with the R programing language (i.e. data structures, types, classes, assignment) and RStudio or a similar IDE

As an independent data visualization specialist, I assist organizations, research teams, and businesses in effectively communicating insights through engaging graphical storytelling. Over the last five years, I have designed graphics across all disciplines, purposes, and styles applying a code–first approach and taught data visualization principles and design to more than 2,500 participants in live trainings for conferences, companie, and research institutions such as Fannie Mae, O’Reilly, Posit/Rstudio, Charite, Robert-Koch-Institut, Bundesinstitut für Bevölkerungsforschung, Duke University, TU München, TU Dresden, Senckenberg, Marine Stewardship Council, and many more.
