In the usual academic career paths, there is often very little training available on how to write a useful review on a scientific manuscript during the peer review process.
This course aims to provide some approaches and tips on how to
1) read a scientific manuscript in a systematic way for peer review and
2) write a critical but constructive review.
Participants will practice these on an example study, and be provided with real reviews. The course also gives an editor’s perspective on what a good review looks like, and what reviewers need to bear in mind if they want to make the peer review process work in the best way for both the authors and the journals.

Susanne Fritz is professor for Biodiversity in the Anthropocene at iDiv and Friedrich Schiller University Jena. She has been active in publishing scientific papers since 2008, with many a painful peer review experience (but some good ones, too). She has been an active member of editorial boards since 2011, e.g. six years for Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and is currently a subject editor for Ecography and Frontiers of Biogeography.
