We explore the many ways that academics are trying navigate their roles and their well-being in the research world. Start to find the lines between what is simply how you feel when you’re under pressure at work and what might be an indicator of more persistent challenges with your well-being or mental health.
Using concrete examples, we highlight the need to:
- Recognise the varied environmental challenges to our well-being in the academic world,
- Find the line between healthy thoughts, emotions, and behavioural patterns, what to look for when
those patterns start to become unhealthy, - Learn how to de-escalate our thoughts, sensations, and emotions when we feel overwhelmed or
stressed, and - Tools to press reset when your day is not going to plan.

Lecturer
Desiree Dickerson, PhD
As a former postdoctoral researcher in the neurosciences and a clinical psychologist, Desiree has worked at both ends of the spectrum – from (lab) bench to bedside. After working in research in New Zealand, Australia, and Austria, she now lives in Spain and spends her time helping academic institutions and academics themselves pursue a healthier approach to research:
-
reframing maladaptive thought and behaviour patterns that hinder our performance.
-
developing habits and lifestyle choices that allow us to think, feel, perform and grow with clarity and intention.
-
increasing resilience to highly stressful environments.
