Research
Biological invasions are considered one of the largest threats to biodiversity, and research on the causes of invasions has exploded in the past two decades. Despite over 1,000 publications in the field of invasion biology, Ecologists have still not reached consensus on which mechanisms cause some non-native species to dominate and alter community structure and ecosystems functions, while other non-native species fail to do so. At sDiv, I will examine how spatial scale, multivariate functional traits and phylogenetic relationships between non-native plants and resident communities influence invasiveness. To accomplish this, I will use databases containing spatially-explicit information on plant communities, phylogenies and functional traits. Fortunately, databases of local plant communities are becoming widely available, functional trait databases such as the TRY initiative provide unprecedented availability of plant traits, and genomic data for developing community-level phylogenies are available in GenBank.
