Project summary:
Tropical forests are key examples of highly diverse ecosystems. However, within some species-rich forests, large patches dominated by a single tree species can occur. This phenomenon is called “Monodominance” if more than 60% of canopy trees belong to one species. A unifying theory of why monodominant clusters emerge and persist for centuries is still missing, but would be of paramount scientific and societal importance. This theory would substantially improve our understanding of the mechanisms that generate, erode, or stabilize diversity.
