yDiv Retreat 2018 - Career Outside Academia

This year's PhD-retreat will take place from May 31 to June 2. The theme is “Career Outside Academia”, and was selected at the last retreat by the participants. The venue will be the Konrad-Martin-Haus in Bad Kösen.

Programme

We have compiled a diverse programme consisting of talks, workshops on the chosen topic, and of course leisure time activities. But before we go deeper into the topic, we will start with the PhD meeting. After that, you will hear job market experiences from testimonials with a PhD in biological science, and you will get to speak to them personally during the BBQ in the evening:

  • Dr Karin Bodewits, Author, Speaker and Trainer (NaturalScience.Careers)
  • Dr Ulrike Garbe, Head of Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve
  • Dr Volker Hahn, Head of Media and Communications, iDiv
  • Dr Iris Köhler, Coordinator Graduate School HIGRADE, UFZ

On Friday, the group will be split in two in order to take part in two short workshops (one in the morning, the other in the afternoon):

1. Careers outside academia

Are you still unsure of whether to stay in academia or not, and would like to learn more about other possibilities before making any decision? This course, which has been specifically developed for PhD students in the natural sciences, will not only broaden your view about everything you can do with your qualification, but also give you practical tips on how to reach your personal goals. You will learn how to:

  • Know about “landscape” of careers
  • approach potential employers
  • successfully apply for job
  • succeed at job interviews
  • negotiate your salary

 2. Personal Potential and Perspectives on the Job Market

Before applying for a job, one needs to know the answer to the following questions: Who am I? (personal values and interests), What is my professional goal? (within the framework of individual motivation and external expectations), What are my key competencies? (Strengths and weaknesses). You will learn to reflect on yourself and focus on your own values, motivation, competencies, and opportunities.

Saturday will be reserved for the concluding discussion and some sightseeing. Have a closer look at what exactly is planned at the complete schedule.
