Workshop: How to build your career strategy for academia or beyond

1 December10:00 am - 3:30 pmBeehive, iDiv Leipzig

In order to get what you want in your career and life you first need to fi-gure out what that is – or, if what you think you want is really the right fit. I will share some ideas that help you to identify your values, transferable skills, and strengths. We will look at how you can use storytelling and networking tools to communicate what you want and to gain visibility – no matter if you want to pursue a career in academia or in other sectors. Finally, we will explore concrete examples of career paths and application strategies.

The workshop will also offer a space to discuss questions and experiences of the participants.

Workshop: Using potential analysis for your career development

1 December9:00 am - 4:30 pmGrand Canyon, iDiv Leipzig

Knowing your potential is a key asset for your career development both within and outside of academia. To gain orientation, define your goals – and eventually achieve them, it is necessary to first create awareness of your personal strengths, weaknesses, competences, and unique characteristics.
In this interactive workshop we will discover qualitative and standardized methods to evaluate your profile and potential for future development. We will use career coaching tools to help you identify your unique set of experiences, strengths, and competences. Additionally, we will use methods for individual and group assessments to see the bigger picture of your current position and the chances for future development. Finally, we will conclude the workshop with a brief outlook on how “knowing your potential” will help you navigating your career in a world of work that is defined by change, complexity, uncertainty, but also diverse chances.

Dr Kathryn Barry

Assistant Professor at Utrecht University, the Netherlands

I am a plant community ecologist who is focused on how plants interact to combat global change and alter how ecosystems function. I try to explore these interactions both above and belowground using grassland and forest biodiversity experiments and in naturally assembled systems. I also work with models of plant communities to make theoretical experiments and understand how interactions result in some of the patterns we see in experiments and nature.

He then took a position as a data manager and statistical consultant at Leipzig University and moved to iDiv in 2016, where he worked as a coordinator in the project 'sMon - Biodiversity Trends in Germany'. Since 2021, he has been working as a research assistant in the establishment staff of the National Biodiversity Monitoring Centre (NMZB) at the BfN, Leipzig site.
