I study the ecological consequences of farmland abandonment and the potential of rewilding as a restoration strategy for degraded ecosystems. Farmland abandonment can lead to changes in animal communities who in turn may influence plant communities, e.g. forest succession patterns. In a field study in Peneda-Gerês National Park in Portugal I try to answer the question whether interspecific interactions between herbivorous mammal species lead to spatial differences in succession patterns. Here I combine camera trapping and remote sensing to monitor both mammal occupancy and changes in forest cover.

I am also involved in a project on automatic object recognition from camera trap images via active learning algorithms.
