Research Interests

Sciene. I am an experimental soil ecologist interested in the effects of species loss on ecosystem functions. For this purpose I use nematodes as indicator organisms and measurements of microbial respiration. This combination allows me to work in different systems and on different topics, such as soils of grasslands and forests, in tree canopies, or on light pollution. These measurements are complemented with expertise on fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), which provide information on microbial community structures, but also biomass information of fungi and bacteria. The activity of extracellular enzymes and water-stable aggregates often complement my research.

Expertise. Due to the position of laboratory manager and the close cooperation with the working group leader Nico Eisenhauer, I have experience of a wide range of methods, as well as a wide variety of administrative procedures.

Teaching. Together with Alexandra Weigelt, I conduct classes for Bachelor and Master students every semester, in which we set up experiments, that are sampled and analyzed together.

My current externally funded projects:

  • TreeDì - 林地 - TreeDiversity Interactions: The role of tree-tree interactions in local neighbourhoods in Chinese subtropical forests - is an International Research Training Group funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS).
  • BETA-FOR - Enhancing structural diversity in production forests - is a Research Unit funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
  • PhytOakmeter - Using clonal oak phytometers to unravel acclimation and adaptation mechanisms of long-lived forest tree holobionts to ecological variations and climate change - is a Research Unit funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
  • Jena-Experiment - Biotic interactions, community assembly, and eco-evolutionary dynamics as drivers of long-term biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships - is a Research Unit funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) (starts in 2024)
