Dr Ellen Latz
I am interested in the factors that drive the structure, stability and functioning of microbial networks (bacteria and protozoa).
The soil microbial food-web is a highly complex system and its trophic structure is sensitive to environmental factors such as temperature, pH and nutrient conditions.
I primarily work with sterile microcosms enabling me to disentangle drivers of e.g. coexistence patterns and determinants of microbial diversity. With this system I can test ecological theory with a high number of replicates and in reduced time-course compared to experiments with higher organisms.
The aim of my studies is not only to increase our knowledge on certain microbial systems, but also upscaling the results to a global scale, improving existing ecological theory and making the effects of environmental change more predictable.
