Cancún. The GEO BON Secretariat has organized a side event during the thirteenth Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Secretariat, hosted by iDiv, invited panelists from countries with already well developed Biodiversity Observation Networks (BONs) and participants will be introduced to the framework and 9 step process that GEO BON is developing and applying for building national and regional BONs.

Building on these experiences, the panelists will illustrate how infrastructures can be established at the country level for biodiversity monitoring and reporting, and how scientific and technical cooperation can be fostered at the regional and global level. Discussions will focus on lessons learned, opportunities for sharing technologies and approaches and the potential for creating a consortium of countries that can lead on, building on current systems and with assistance from GEO BON, designing replicable biodiversity observation systems.
