Sustainability and Complexity in Ape Habitat

In our group we conduct research on the sustainability of the use of natural resources in great ape habitat. Many countries within the great ape range in Africa and Asia are very rich in mineral resources and timber, they offer space for large-scale industrial agriculture and harbor extraordinary biodiversity. Rapidly growing human populations and the global demand for these resources are impacting on ape populations, their habitat and sympatric biodiversity. With our research, we try on one hand to better understand the socio-economic mechanisms and drivers of this unsustainable resource use. On the other hand we address the question on how to improve sustainable natural resource use ranging from field studies on a local scale to informing policy about great ape status on a range wide scale.
