Integrating biotic interactions into the PhenObs and PolDiv project

Abstract

PhenObs is a constantly increasing global network, that currently comprises associated partners from 12 Botanical Gardens. PhenObs has the aim to (I) study phenological variations on regional and global scale, (II) identify drivers of plant phenology across the growing season and in response to variation in climate and (III) find the relationship between phenology and plant functional traits. With this, PhenObs enables monitoring phenological changes and effects of climate change in a controlled setting.
The PolDiv-project is more specifically investigating pollen diversity, including anemophilous as well as zoophilous species, and considers the respective physiological, species and intraspecific traits and quantity of pollen.
PhenObs and PolDiv are integrative iDiv projects that already connect members from Halle, Leipzig, Jena. Within a next step, we plan to integrate biotic interaction within the PhenObs project to initialise an integrative phenology research platform and to further explore already ongoing plant-pollinator interactions in PolDiv.

We want to link observational data of the Botanical Gardens to iDiv platforms, projects and initiatives (e.g., Ecotron, GCEF, iCyt) to foster the integration across the research areas Change, Complexity and Functions. With this, we see great potential to create an important long-term data-set on plant and animal phenology, as well as on respective plant traits (e.g. pollination relevant and pollen traits).
The workshop will bring together iDiv scientists from different disciplines in biodiversity research. The overall aim of the workshop is to discuss and identify the possibilities, challenges, and common goals by integrating biotic interactions within the PhenObs and PolDiv projects.
