Al Faruq \/ Pexels<\/span><\/a>                        \n                                                    <\/div>\n                                        <div class=\"sliderinhalt \" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"carousel\">\n\n                                                \n\n                                                <p class=\"big align-center\" >13.10.2025 | Forschung, iDiv, Medienmitteilung<\/p>                                            <h1 class=\"h1 tcenter\" >Wie Mikroben Methanemissionen aus Grundwasser eind\u00e4mmen<\/h1>                                                    <div style=\"text-align: center;\">Eine neue Studie in <i>PNAS<\/i> sch\u00e4tzt, dass Mikroben etwa zwei Drittel der global im Grundwasser produzierten Methanmenge abbauen.<\/div>\n                                                \n                                                                                                            <\/div>\n                                            <\/div>\n\n                        \n                 <\/div>\n\n                              <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"textbildrepeater pb-24 pt-0 no-bg modulclass \" id=\"\">\n    <div class=\"container\">\n        <div class=\"row\">\n                                                                <div class=\"pb-24   mod_text  col-md-8 offset-md-2 pos_top\">\n                            <div class=\"textrepeater \" id=\"\">\n    <p><em>Basierend auf einer gemeinsamen Pressemitteilung des MPI BGC und des Exzellenzclusters \u201eBalance of the Microverse\u201c (Universit\u00e4t Jena)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mikroben im Grundwasser wirken als \u201eMethanfilter\u201c und reduzieren die Emissionen dieses starken Treibhausgases erheblich, laut einer neuen Studie in der Fachzeitschrift <em>PNAS<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forschende vom Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr Biogeochemie (MPI BGC), der Friedrich-Schiller-Universit\u00e4t Jena und dem Deutschen Zentrum f\u00fcr integrative Biodiversit\u00e4tsforschung (iDiv) nutzten eine hochsensitive Radiokohlenstoff-Tracermethode, um nachzuweisen, dass Mikroorganismen mehr als die H\u00e4lfte des im Grundwasser enthaltenen Methans verbrauchen, bevor es entweichen kann.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201eUnsere Ergebnisse zeigen, dass ein hochaktiver mikrobieller Methanfilter im Grundwasser eine entscheidende Rolle dabei spielt, die Freisetzung von Methan in Oberfl\u00e4chengew\u00e4sser, B\u00f6den und Atmosph\u00e4re zu begrenzen\u201c, erkl\u00e4rt Erstautorin Beatrix M. Heinze vom MPI BGC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methan ist ein starkes Treibhausgas: Seine W\u00e4rmespeicherf\u00e4higkeit ist kurzfristig etwa 84-mal h\u00f6her als die von Kohlendioxid. Rasche Reduktionen der Methanemissionen z\u00e4hlen daher zu den wirksamsten Ma\u00dfnahmen gegen die globale Erw\u00e4rmung. Methan aus mikrobiellen oder fossilen Quellen ist h\u00e4ufig im Grundwasser enthalten. In hohen Konzentrationen kann es die Trinkwasserqualit\u00e4t beeintr\u00e4chtigen und in die Umwelt entweichen. Mikrobielle Oxidation ist der einzige bekannte biologische Prozess, der Methan abbaut.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methanabbau h\u00e4ngt von der Konzentration ab<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Das Team beprobte Grundw\u00e4sser aus flachen Karbonat- und Sandstein-Aquiferen in Mittel- und Norddeutschland, deren Methankonzentrationen sich \u00fcber f\u00fcnf Gr\u00f6\u00dfenordnungen erstreckten \u2013 von kaum nachweisbar bis \u00fcbers\u00e4ttigt. Die Raten der mikrobiellen Methanoxidation variierten \u00e4hnlich stark und korrelierten eng mit der Methankonzentration im Grundwasser.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201eUnsere Methode erm\u00f6glichte es uns nicht nur, die mikrobielle Methanoxidation zu quantifizieren, sondern auch zu bestimmen, wie viel des Methans die Mikroben f\u00fcr den Aufbau von Biomasse nutzen\u201c, erl\u00e4utert Heinze. \u201eWir fanden heraus, dass Grundwassermikroben Methan haupts\u00e4chlich zur Energiegewinnung und weniger f\u00fcr das Wachstum verwenden.\u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Der Methanumsatz \u2013 also die Zeit, die Mikroben ben\u00f6tigen, um das verf\u00fcgbare Methan vollst\u00e4ndig zu verbrauchen \u2013 reichte von wenigen Tagen bis zu mehreren Jahrzehnten, abh\u00e4ngig von der Konzentration.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mikroben entfernen weltweit mehr als die H\u00e4lfte des Grundwasser-Methans<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angesichts des starken Zusammenhangs zwischen Methanoxidationsraten und Methankonzentrationen sammelten die Autorinnen und Autoren ver\u00f6ffentlichte Daten zu Methankonzentrationen in Grundw\u00e4ssern weltweit. Durch Extrapolation ihrer Ergebnisse sch\u00e4tzen sie, dass methanoxidierende Mikroben j\u00e4hrlich zwischen 167 und 778 Teragramm Methan abbauen \u2013 das entspricht etwa zwei Dritteln der global im Grundwasser produzierten Methanmenge.
