Research focus

Our research aims at understanding the patterns and processes of global biodiversity change, with the goal of informing environmental policy and management of ecosystems. We are particularly interested in the impacts of land-use change on biodiversity and ecosystem services across scale. Our research ranges from fieldwork on the biodiversity consequences of rewilding abandoned farmland to models of biodiversity for future socio-economic scenarios. We strive to also bring the best science to policy making, so we engage in multiple fora with policy makers, including the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and the Convention on Biological Diversity. Finally, we want to contribute to improve the availability of data on biodiversity change worldwide, so we host the secretariat of the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network.

Projects

We have several on-going projects, but we highlight four. In the first project we aim at developing a mechanistic theory for countryside biogeography. The idea of countryside biogeography is that species are not restricted to native habitat fragments but use the entire landscape. We have demonstrated that the countryside-species are relationship describes better species richness patterns in human modified landscapes. We are now developing a theory that goes beyond the species richness patterns to also explain species abundance patterns in human modified landscapes.

The second project is an European Commission FP7 funded project, project DESIRE. In this project we are developing a biodiversity extension for an economic input-output table describing the trade and the global economy. The goal is to be able to assess the indirect impacts of economic activities on biodiversity. For instance, we would like to assess what is the indirect impact of the food industry in Europe on biodiversity at home and overseas.

The third project is the development of the Essential Biodiversity Variables framework. Ultimately the goal is to join data from multiple sources to provide datasets for a couple of essential biodiversity variables globally. We will be using a conjugation of modelling and statistical integration of in situ and remote sensing observations in order to do this.

The fourth project is at the interface between biodiversity conservation research and policies. In this project we investigate the potential for rewilding to address the issue of farmland abandonment in Europe, by restoring self-sustaining ecosystems. Our research involves the study of patterns of farmland abandonment, the assessment of the potential for passive restoration or the need for "assisted rewilding", and the contribution of rewilding to biodiversity and human well-being.
